The official launch event of the Cancer Patient Care Society (CPCS), Rahma, took place held on Tuesday, September 15, 2015 evening, at the Emirates Palace Hotel in Abu Dhabi. Among those in attendance were senior UAE officials and an elite group of experts, journalists, academics, public figures and diplomats. H.E. Dr. Jamal Sanad Al-Suwaidi, Director General of the Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research (ECSSR) and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Cancer Patient Care Society (Rahma), reiterated that the establishment of Rahma represents part of the efforts exerted by the UAE, and the Abu Dhabi government in particular, to combat cancer, raise awareness, and devise innovative support mechanisms that help alleviate the suffering that cancer patients, and indeed their families, go through. His Excellency pointed out that there are many cancer patients both in the UAE and abroad in need of greater societal and psychological support. Voluntary organizations such as Rahma can help mitigate the pain and suffering of cancer patients and raise awareness about the disease, which as a result could serve to further enhance the effectiveness of current healthcare system efforts. H.E. Al-Suwaidi added that the society shall operate in accordance with the highest ethical and professional standards in order to meet its objectives, incorporating traditional Emirati principles and values that do not discriminate on the basis of color, religion or race. H.E. Dr. Al-Suwaidi stated that in order to realize its goals, Rahma shall adopt a strategy of community mobilization whereby it utilizes society’s resources to improve cancer patient care by attracting volunteers to join the society. Rahma shall look to provide useful information to cancer patients, their families and friends to help them better understand the dangers of cancer, its causes and modes of prevention. Part of such efforts will include the construction of a comprehensive database of the best cancer treatment hospitals and medical centers in the world.
